What's the history of Sudoku?

Like pretty much every puzzle, sudoku has undergone many changes and evolved substantially over the years.

In the late 1900s, experiments with magic squares in French newspapers led to the creation of number puzzles that would eventually become sudoku. However, the game as we know it only came into existence in 1979 thanks to Howard Garns, a 74-year-old retired man who designed a game he called "Number Place." This is the earliest known example of modern sudoku. Five years later, the president of a Japanese puzzle company, Maki Kaji, added these puzzles to his magazine with the name "Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru." Eventually, this name was shortened to the much simpler "sudoku."

It would take over a decade for sudoku to spread to the rest of the world on a large scale. In 1997, Hong Kong judge Wayne Gould found a puzzle in a Japanese bookshop and then spent six years developing a program that could rapidly create unique sudoku puzzles. Because he knew that British newspapers often published similar puzzles, he submitted his creations to "The Times." In 2004, the company printed the first versions of Gould's sudoku puzzles. Within months, sudoku had spread to the rest of the world and become a mainstream success.
