Ferris Bueller and his sister, Jeanie, seemed to have very little in common in the film. However, in real life, the actors playing these iconic roles were a romantic couple. Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey met on the set of Ferris Bueller's Day Off and dated for about a year before getting engaged. Both actors were working steadily, building successful careers. In 1987 the two lovebirds set off on a getaway to Ireland. Grey's cult classic Dirty Dancing was just weeks from being released when they left for their trip. While driving on wet Irish roads, they were in an accident where Broderick received severe injuries. The two women in the other car, both locals, were killed in the crash. The actors dealt with the tragedy's grief, and Grey said she was nearly crushed by survivor's guilt. The two ended their engagement, citing the stress of the auto accident as the major factor.
