Tarot cards weren't always used to tell fortunes. Before their appearance in the world of divinity, they were just another card game. The use of tarot cards for fortune-telling began in 1,700 when Jean-Baptise Alliette (also known as Etteilla) published the first guide explaining the meaning of each card. He created his own deck to go with his guide and used astronomy and the four elements in the stories that he crafted. Now people all over the world use tarot cards to look into the future and see what fortunes await. Each card has its own meaning, with individual characters endowed with strengths and pitfalls. Are you wise like The Sun or optimistic like The Fool? Maybe you're introspective like The Hermit or courageous like The Chariot. Take our quiz to find out!

Tarot cards used to be painted

Tarot cards first appeared in the 1500s, before the existence of the printing press. Each card was hand-painted, making every deck an expensive novelty item. Tarot cards were owned primarily by wealthy Italian families who used them to play a card game that was similar to modern-day bridge. The later arrival of the printing press meant that many more cards to be produced at less cost, and the availability of tarot cards grew along with their popularity.
