Sword Art Online follows gamer protagonist Kazuo "Kirito" Kirigaya as he is one of 10,000 players to become trapped in the virtual world of the MMORPG, Sword Art Online. With the others, he is told that they will have to beat 100 floors of the Aincrad castle in order to escape, but if they die in the game, they die in real life. While Kirito originally plays on his own and avoids other people, over the course of the journey, he makes friends and even falls in love. What is an isekai?
Sword Art Online is considered to be a part of the isekai genre. Isekai is a Japanese word that translates to "other world." In isekai series, the protagonist is an ordinary person from Earth that is moved into a fantastical other world. In Sword Art Online's case, that world is virtual, but in other series, it might be a fantasy world or a parallel universe. The term isekai can be divided into two subsections, one where the character is transported to the new world and one where they are reincarnated in it. Transportation isekai is more common in earlier works, whereas reincarnation isekai is more common in later works in the genre. Some of the earlier known isekais are the Japanese folklore story of Urashima Tarō and English stories like Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz.
