If you grew up in the ’80s, you probably remember one thing being everywhere: ashtrays. On coffee tables. In restaurants. At the mall. Even in hospital waiting rooms. And yes, sometimes on airplanes, right next to the “no smoking” signs people completely ignored. Cigarette smoke was just part of the scenery—lingering in the drapes, on your clothes, and in every public space that didn’t explicitly say otherwise (and even then, sometimes).
By today’s standards, it’s wild. But back then, ashtrays were as common as remote controls and rotary phones. Smoking wasn’t just allowed—it was expected. And while Stranger Things gets a lot of 1980s nostalgia right, it’s definitely missing the haze of secondhand smoke floating through most indoor scenes.
In short, if the Byers family had a living room without at least one ashtray, that’s the biggest supernatural event of all.
