History Lesson

The Invention of the Zipper

Before zippers, fastening your clothes was a whole ordeal—think buttons, hooks, and laces, all requiring time and precision. That changed in the early 20th century when a small but mighty invention zipped into the spotlight.

The first version came from Elias Howe (yes, the sewing machine guy), who patented something called an “Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure” in 1851. But he didn’t pursue it. Decades later, in 1893, Whitcomb Judson showcased his “Clasp Locker” at the Chicago World’s Fair. It was bulky, awkward, and not great at actually staying closed—but it sparked an idea.

The real breakthrough came from a Swedish-American engineer named Gideon Sundback. In 1913, he developed the modern zipper, improving the design so it actually worked—smooth, simple, and sturdy. His version used interlocking teeth and a slider to open and close garments quickly. He called it the “separable fastener,” but the name “zipper” stuck after B.F. Goodrich started using it on rubber boots in the 1920s.

The zipper didn’t just stay on boots. It zipped into fashion in the 1930s, offering a faster, cleaner way to close everything from skirts to jackets. Today, it’s everywhere.

Some houseplants sleep at night

Many plants follow a circadian rhythm just like we do. At night, some close their leaves, droop gently, or shift their orientation in response to darkness—a phenomenon known as nyctinasty. It’s a quiet signal that even the most decorative parts of your home are following their own routines.
