How did Selling Sunset begin?
Selling Sunset follows The Oppenheim Group, a real estate brokerage in LA, founded and run by twin brothers Brett and Jason Oppenheim.
The brokerage is a 5 generation family business, founded in 1889 as The Stern Realty Company. Jacob Stern was Brett and Jason's great-great-grandfather, so it's no surprise that the brothers are super successful at what they do! But how did the idea for the reality show begin? The creator of popular reality shows such as The Hills and Laguna Beach, Adam Divello, saw one of the brokerage's advertisement billboards while driving on Sunset Boulevard. He thought the realtor group already looked like readymade television stars. He contacted the brokerage who, after much deliberation, agreed to shoot a pilot, and the rest is history! All the stars of the reality show are certified realtors, and it isn't staged or scripted, contrary to popular belief. The drama and the listings are 100% real!
