Ponyo is one of Studio Ghibli’s most beloved movies, winning over children and adults alike. "Ponyo" is pretty much "The Little Mermaid" but with a happy ending
If the plot of "Ponyo" seems a little familiar to you, it should. It's basically a loose retelling of "The Little Mermaid." Miyazaki read the story when he was young and was inspired, but he also had some problems with it. So, eventually, he took the opportunity to retell the story and fix the problems that he had with it. Like the Little Mermaid, Ponyo is a creature of the sea who wants to be human and, through magic, gets the chance. Like the Little Mermaid does, Ponyo meets a boy on land and falls in love. However, in the original story, the Little Mermaid has to make a deal with an evil creature for the magic to change, and, in Ponyo, the magic comes from love. Also, at the end of the original story (not the Disney version), the Little Mermaid loses everything and dissolves into sea foam. Ponyo risks losing everything and being turned into sea foam but instead gets to stay human and have a happy ending.
