Ponyo is one of Studio Ghibli’s most beloved movies, winning over children and adults alike. If you’re a fan of the movie, you probably find yourself captivated by the magical undersea world and the quaint fishing village that lies above it. You may find yourself strongly relating to one or another of the characters. Do you have the reckless innocence of Ponyo? Maybe you have the bravery and protective instincts of Sosuke? Do you care about things so much that it hurts and you have to hide yourself away, like Fujimoto? Would you risk your life to help people in trouble, like Lisa does?

Today, Haven still likes to know a bit about everything. When they're not researching information for their posts or flexing that history degree, Haven's going through the quizzes of other authors on the site - because this is where the facts are found! Did you know?

"Ponyo" is pretty much "The Little Mermaid" but with a happy ending

If the plot of "Ponyo" seems a little familiar to you, it should. It's basically a loose retelling of "The Little Mermaid." Miyazaki read the story when he was young and was inspired, but he also had some problems with it. So, eventually, he took the opportunity to retell the story and fix the problems that he had with it. Like the Little Mermaid, Ponyo is a creature of the sea who wants to be human and, through magic, gets the chance. Like the Little Mermaid does, Ponyo meets a boy on land and falls in love. However, in the original story, the Little Mermaid has to make a deal with an evil creature for the magic to change, and, in Ponyo, the magic comes from love. Also, at the end of the original story (not the Disney version), the Little Mermaid loses everything and dissolves into sea foam. Ponyo risks losing everything and being turned into sea foam but instead gets to stay human and have a happy ending.

How to Play?

Our personality quizzes are set up a little differently than your basic trivia quiz, but you’ve probably seen their kind around. Rather than having to choose the right answer from a list of multiple choice options, in this case, there is no “right answer”! (Two plus two will always be four, but every Golden Girls character is equally awesome.)

So, stop stressing. Just click on the answer that suits you best, and enjoy the ride. These quizzes are just for fun but who knows – you might just learn something about yourself along the way!
