How ancient astronomers named the planets in our solar system
Long before telescopes and space probes, ancient sky-watchers noticed the “wanderers” moving differently from the fixed stars. To them, each glowing light carried divine energy, so they gave the planets the names of gods. Mercury, darting quickly across the sky, became the messenger. Venus, brightest of all, was tied to love and beauty. Mars, with its red glow, belonged to the god of war. Jupiter, the largest, was named after the king of the gods, while Saturn, slow and steady, echoed the god of time.
Centuries later, as telescopes revealed even more distant worlds, astronomers kept the mythological theme alive. Uranus took the name of the ancient sky god, and Neptune, shimmering deep blue, was linked to the god of the sea.

Unlike the rocky planets, Jupiter is made mostly of hydrogen and helium — the same ingredients that fuel our Sun. In fact, astronomers believe that if Jupiter had been about 80 times more massive, the crushing pressure at its core would have triggered nuclear fusion, and it would have lit up as a star. Imagine a solar system with two suns blazing in the sky, reshaping life on Earth as we know it.
Instead, Jupiter sits in a sweet spot: too small to ignite, but big enough to dominate the neighborhood.
