History Lesson
Drawing from the rich tapestry of ancient Greece, the philosophers of this era were the architects of Western thought. Their musings, debates, and discourses laid the groundwork for many of the philosophical traditions and scientific inquiries we engage with today.
In the bustling agora of ancient Athens and the serene landscapes of the Mediterranean, thinkers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle pondered the nature of existence, ethics, and knowledge. Socrates, with his piercing questions, sought to unravel the truths hidden in conventional wisdom. He believed that an unexamined life wasn't worth living, a sentiment that would cost him his life but immortalize his legacy. His student, Plato, took these teachings and wove them into intricate philosophical dialogues, introducing the world to the ethereal realm of Forms. Plato's own student, Aristotle, grounded these ideas back into the tangible world, emphasizing empirical observations and categorizing the natural world in a manner that would influence science for centuries.
Yet, the philosophical landscape of Greece wasn't just dominated by these three giants. The Pre-Socratics, like Pythagoras, delved into the mysteries of the universe, seeking the fundamental substance from which all things emerged. Post-Socratic thinkers, on the other hand, branched out into various schools of thought, from the tranquility-seeking teachings of Epicurus to the stoic acceptance of life's vicissitudes championed by Zeno of Citium. These philosophers, with their diverse approaches to life's big questions, showcased the vibrant intellectual spirit of ancient Greece, a spirit that continues to inspire and challenge us today.
Quiz Writer
Joselyn wasn’t too keen on multiple choice in high school. She vividly remembers the first biology exam she passed by only the skin of her teeth, which dragged her overall average down into the embarrassingly low 90s (she doesn’t want to talk about it). After swearing off any high school or university courses that required multiple choice tests, Joselyn managed to get an English degree by sweet-talking her professors into offering only essay-style exams. Needless to say, this did not exactly endear her to her peers. This rocky start smoothed out in time, though, and after tumbling down a black quiz hole one day while putting off job hunting, Joselyn realized her hatred of all things a-b-or-c had faded and she actually enjoyed dreaming up new ideas for questions and dangerously correct-sounding answers. You won’t find her quizzes an easy ride, but Joselyn just wants to make sure you’re really testing your knowledge.
Did you know?
There's a famous quote from Bertrand Russel which says "Science is what you know. Philosophy is what you don't know". Throughout history, philosophers have been pioneers and thought leaders. Pythagoras, a famous mathematician and philosopher, was an early supporter of women's rights. In 530 BC he started a school and accepted both male and female students; something that was incredibly unusual at that time.
Philosophical schools of thought describe how people think about and approach everything around them. These schools of thought vary massively, but there's one thing most philosophers agree on, and that's the importance of continuous education. John Dewey once said, "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself". That outlook is something he embraced throughout his whole life, and it's something modern philosophers embrace too. Whatever school of thought you belong to, we hope that you'll learn something today, and keep on learning every day of your life.
