Which of These Cowboy Bebop Characters Are You?

Spike. Ed. Faye. These are all memorable characters from a show that redefined what anime could do. The show was a compelling drama about two hungry freelancers and their dog just trying to survive in a futuristic world full of criminals, con artists, and other lowlifes. Though Cowboy Bebop debuted in April of 1998, it's never gone out of style. Netflix is currently working on a live-action adaptation of this classic, which fans are eagerly looking forward to. So which character of this classic anime reflects your true, inner self? Are you as happy-go-lucky as Spike, as upbeat yet pensive as Faye, or does your inner self more accurately reflect Jet's pragmatism? Remember, there are no wrong answers; just like are no bad characters in Cowboy Bebop.

Did you know?

Each episode of Cowboy Bebop ties to a different style of music!

Though the creators of Cowboy Bebop cited jazz as an influence, in reality, each episode is influenced by a separate subgenre of jazz. You can see this most clearly in each episode title, such as "Asteroid Blues" or "Stray Dog Strut." The soundtrack and plot for each episode tie into the musical themes, as well. For instance, "Asteroid Blues," the first episode of the series, sees Spike and Jet aimlessly drifting through space, upset because they're broke. Whereas episode three, "Honky Tonk Woman," introduces us to another main character, the wanderer Faye. Jazz developed as a musical style in New Orleans in the 1910s, where African musical styles such as blues blended with brass-band marches, French quadrilles, and ragtime. Originally, the music was meant to be danced to, and jazz halls quickly became popular entertainment venues in New Orleans. Kansas City jazz, developed in the 1930s, emphasized the big-band aspect of the musical style, while smooth jazz in the 1940s gave us a calmer and more melodic style. Smooth jazz was meant to be listened to rather than danced. Regardless of style, all types of jazz prize improvisation, and each musician giving every piece a personal touch.
