Mulan is Based on a Real Legend
Mulan is based on the female warrior Hua Mulan described in the 6th Chinese poem "The Ballad of Mulan." The origins of The Ballad of Mulan are hard to trace, as they were part of a larger collection of lyrics and songs that no longer exist. Much like the Disney character, Hua Mulan disguised herself as a man to fight off a Rouran invasion. "The Ballad of Mulan" regularly reappears throughout history in various songs, plays, and poetry, all with slight variations to the original tale. While most variations have a happy ending, there are some darker ones out there. In one of the more tragic versions, "Legends from Sui and Tang," Mulan is rewarded for her bravery and combat prowess in battle despite her commanding officers finding out she is a woman. As she returns home to her family with her newfound riches, she discovers her father has died. Having barely dealt with the tragedy, she is then ordered by the Emperor to become his concubine, leading her to take her own life to preserve her honor.
