The cast helped develop the characters
On some projects, the director and screenwriters expect their actors to stick to the script as much as possible. That is definitely not the case for The Umbrella Academy. A lot of improvisation goes into each scene, especially when Klaus is around. Beyond that, the crew actively encouraged the actors to define parts of their characters.
Perhaps the most famous example of this is the dance scene to “I Think We’re Alone Now,” where every actor improvised their dance moves. Around season two, the writers even started approaching the actors for suggestions on how their characters would react in certain situations.
