Transcendental terror: the rise of enlightened horror

In the vast realm of horror cinema, there's a subgenre that goes beyond mere jump scares and blood-curdling screams. Enter transcendental horror, where protagonists don't just flee from monsters or confront their fears. Instead, they find themselves in a state of communion with the very horrors that threaten them. Rather than being mere victims, they often embrace these dark forces, seeing them not as destroyers but as liberators. This unique twist offers viewers a journey where the lines between good and evil blur, and the human spirit transcends its earthly confines.

2019 was a notable year for this subgenre, with films like "Midsommar" and "The Lighthouse" captivating audiences. In "Midsommar," the lead character, Dani, doesn't just escape the pagan cult; she becomes its queen, her mind altered by grief, betrayal, and potent hallucinogens. Similarly, in "The Lighthouse," Ephraim Winslow's descent into madness culminates in a moment of enlightenment, albeit one that leads to his doom. These films, among others, showcase the protagonist's journey from an ordinary existence to a mystical, often terrifying, enlightenment.

The roots of transcendental horror can be traced back to the body-horror boom of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Directors like David Lynch and David Cronenberg explored the extremities of physical existence, using the human body as a source of both horror and spiritual ecstasy. Their pioneering work paved the way for modern tales where characters don't just face their fears; they embrace and transcend them, offering viewers a hauntingly beautiful cinematic experience.

Did you know?

The games are full of easter eggs to other horror franchises

It really should come as no surprise that one of the most iconic horror franchises in modern media is full of references to the characters and stories that influenced it. Five Nights at Freddy's has always been a love letter to the genre. From the very beginning, players could find little easter eggs for other franchises. For example, the infamous animatronic scream from the first game originated from the movie Inseminoid—specifically from the alien baby birth scene.

But that's not all! Even Freddy Fazbear's name is a reference to the iconic slasher villain Freddy Krueger. Five Nights at Freddy's 4's tagline is "The Final Chapter," which is probably a nod to the fourth installment of the Friday the 13th series. The kicker? Neither installment is the actual final chapter of their respective franchises. In that same game, there are numerous easter eggs for It. Honestly, you can't go very far in any of the games without finding a reference to something.
