Earwig and the Witch is a first-of-its-kind movie for Studio Ghibli. The studio had always been known for its lovingly hand-drawn animation, a technique it stuck with even in an age when every other animated movie studio has fully embraced the use of CGI. This movie marks Studio Ghibli’s first foray into the world of CGI animation. The decision to switch to computer graphics was made by the movie’s director, Goro Miyazaki, the son of famed studio founder Hayao Miyazaki. He wanted to do something new and put his own mark on the studio’s productions, so he went with computer animation; he also worked with an all-new team rather than the old team that had always worked with his father. The decision to go with CGI drew some mixed reactions, with some fans disapproving of the move away from hand-drawn animation and others embracing the new medium.
