What's the deal with manga?

The origins of manga can be traced back to the 12th century when illustrated scrolls known as emakimono were popular in Japan. These scrolls often depicted stories of battles, romances, and other dramatic events and served as a precursor to modern manga.

The first modern manga magazine, Shonen Sekai, was published in Japan in 1895. However, it wasn't until the 1940s that manga truly began to take off as a favored medium. The post-World War II period was marked by a rise in literacy rates and a boom in the publishing industry, which paved the way for the mass production and distribution of manga.

One of the most influential manga creators of the post-war era was Osamu Tezuka, who is often referred to as the "godfather of manga." Tezuka's work, including "Astro Boy" and "Black Jack," helped establish many conventions and themes that have come to define the medium.

During the 1960s and 1970s, manga experienced another wave of popularity thanks to the rise of the shonen manga genre, which is aimed at young boys. Series such as "Golgo 13" and "Lone Wolf and Cub" became wildly popular in Japan and were eventually adapted into movies, TV shows, and other media.

The 1980s saw the rise of the shoujo manga genre, which is aimed at young girls. Series such as "Sailor Moon" and "Cardcaptor Sakura" became massively popular both in Japan and around the world and helped to establish manga as a significant cultural export.

In the 1990s and 2000s, manga continued to grow in popularity and diversity. The medium saw the rise of new genres, such as yaoi and yuri manga, which are aimed at LGBTQ+ audiences. The popularity of manga also led to the creation of anime adaptations, which helped to bring the stories and characters to an even wider audience.

Today, manga continues to be a major part of Japanese popular culture and has gained a massive following around the world. Fans of the medium come from all walks of life, and manga has inspired a wide range of adaptations, including movies, TV shows, video games, and more.
