History Lesson

The Surprising Story Behind “Jingle Bells”

“Jingle Bells” is one of the most iconic Christmas carols, but here’s a twist—it wasn’t originally written for Christmas at all! Composed in 1857 by James Lord Pierpont, the song was first titled “The One Horse Open Sleigh” and was intended to celebrate Thanksgiving. Pierpont’s inspiration came from the sleigh races popular in the 19th century, capturing the excitement and cheer of dashing through the snow.

The song debuted at a Thanksgiving church service in Savannah, Georgia, where Pierpont worked as a music director. Its lively melody and catchy lyrics quickly made it a hit. Over time, the song became associated with Christmas, thanks to its snowy imagery and joyful tone. By the late 19th century, “Jingle Bells” had become a staple of the holiday season.

Today, it’s hard to imagine the holidays without “Jingle Bells.” From school choirs to festive gatherings, the carol’s infectious energy has made it a universal symbol of holiday cheer—even if it started as a tune for a completely different holiday!

Did you know?

Christmas Carols Have Been Sung in Space

In 1965, Christmas cheer made its way beyond Earth when astronauts aboard NASA’s Gemini 6 mission performed the first-ever carol in space. On December 16, during a routine communication with Mission Control, astronauts Tom Stafford and Wally Schirra played a surprise rendition of “Jingle Bells” using a tiny harmonica and sleigh bells they had smuggled aboard. Their playful performance brought laughter and joy back on Earth, adding a festive touch to their historic mission.

Later, the Apollo 8 crew carried the tradition forward in 1968, when they became the first humans to orbit the moon. On Christmas Eve, they shared a heartfelt broadcast, reading from the Book of Genesis and wishing everyone on Earth a Merry Christmas. Though no carol was sung, the moment became one of the most iconic holiday broadcasts in history.

Since then, astronauts have celebrated Christmas in space with decorations, festive meals, and yes—carols. It’s a reminder that even beyond the stars, the joy of Christmas carols brings people together, no matter how far apart they may be.
