In voodoo, zombies are said to be the reanimated corpses of the dead, brought back to life by a bokor (a voodoo sorcerer) using a powerful potion. These zombies are believed to have no will of their own and are controlled by the bokor, serving as their slaves.
The idea of zombies as undead creatures that crave human flesh came about in the 20th century with the publication of the novel "The Magic Island" by William Seabrook in 1929. The book detailed Seabrook's travels to Haiti, where he claimed to have witnessed real-life zombies. The book helped to popularize the concept of zombies in Western culture.
The film industry played a significant role in the evolution of zombies. In 1932, the movie "White Zombie" was released, marking the first time zombies were depicted on the big screen. However, it wasn't until George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" in 1968 that zombies became the flesh-eating creatures we know today.
Romero's zombies were slow-moving, mindless creatures with a taste for human flesh. The film was a critical and commercial success, leading to a wave of zombie movies and TV shows in the following decades. Romero's sequels, "Dawn of the Dead" and "Day of the Dead," further solidified the modern zombie archetype.
Zombies also became a staple in popular culture outside of film and television, with video games like "Resident Evil" and "Left 4 Dead" putting players in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. The popularity of these games led to a resurgence in zombie movies and TV shows in the 2000s, such as "28 Days Later," "The Walking Dead," and "World War Z."

The Last of Us is one of the most critically acclaimed video games of all time, and it's known for its gripping story, immersive world, and memorable characters. But did you know that the game's creators drew inspiration from a real-life fungus?
The fungus in question is called Cordyceps, and it's known for its ability to take over the brains of insects and control their behavior. In The Last of Us, Cordyceps has mutated to infect humans, leading to a post-apocalyptic world where survivors must fend off hordes of infected humans.
The use of Cordyceps in the game adds a level of realism and horror, as the fungus is both terrifying and fascinating in its real-life properties. It just goes to show that sometimes the truth is stranger — and scarier — than fiction.
