Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an actual book
In addition to being featured in Harry Potter lore as a fictional Hogwarts textbook written by Newton "Newt" Scamander and making the required reading list at the Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them also exists in our world as a guide book by J.K. Rowling. It was first published in 2001, and Rowling used the pseudonym of Newt Scamander for immersion purposes. The book has information on 75 magical creatures and detailed notes meant to be handwritten by beloved Harry Potter characters, including Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, serving as juicy supplemental material for the most voracious Potterheads to sink their teeth into. The first edition cover was designed to look like Harry's copy of the book, complete with a sticker that reads "Property of: Harry Potter" and scratch marks undoubtedly caused by one of the beasts. The 2017 "for wizards" edition of the book features six new creatures: the hidebehind, the hodag, the horned serpent, the snallygaster, the thunderbird, and the wampus cat.
