Cruella was inspired by real life events
The writer of the original 1956 novel “101 Dalmatians”, Dodie Smith, was inspired by her real-life when she wrote the original storyline that brought Cruella de Vil to life. She had nine dalmatians as pets, including one that she named Pongo. According to Smith, she came up with the idea for Cruella’s obsession with dalmatian fur after one of her friends commented on the softness of her dogs’ fur and noted that the fur would make a lovely coat. The inspiration for Cruella did not end there; however, as Smith drove a 1939 Rolls Royce “Sedanca De Ville,” which undoubtedly inspired the infamous last name of the character.
