Which Castle in the Sky Character Are You?

What would you do if you could possess a powerful, ancient artifact? Would it make a difference if the coveted item had the potential to hurt other people? In Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky, the characters confront such a dilemma in many ways. Some surprise us with their capacity for growth, while others prove that evil sometimes exists solely to perpetrate evil. They remind us that it takes a special kind of person to use their power for good and an even more unique soul to destroy it for humanity's sake. Even though Studio Ghibli released Castle in 1986, the film's themes are still relevant in a rapidly evolving world. The question is, how do they relate to you? Could you be the reluctant hero who uses their influence for the greater good, or would you do whatever it takes to win the power you crave? Indulge your true desires as you answer the following questions to find which Castle in the Sky character you most resemble in the battle between good and evil.

Did you know?

Which classic tale does Hayao Miyazaki pay homage to in Castle in the Sky?

Did you know that Castle in the Sky references a classic piece of Western literature? Before Laputian robots fell from the sky, Irish poet and satirist Jonathan Swift dreamt up the tale of Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's surgeon whose voyages take him to faraway lands. In Gulliver's Travels, there also exists a flying island called Laputa. The King sits on his throne there, instilling a sense of fear in the land below to ensure obedience. Likewise, Castle in the Sky's Colonel Muska believes it is his birthright to dominate humankind from his floating homeland. Swift used Gulliver's Travels to satirize certain aspects of society, like politics, religion, and human nature. Miyazaki was no stranger to social commentary himself, and he used films like Castle and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind to take a strong stance against war and violence. As for the film's clever use of flying machines, it's an homage to Miyazaki's lifelong fascination with aviation. His father, Katsuji Miyazaki, was the director of Miyazaki Airplane, an aircraft parts manufacturer based in Japan during World War II.
