Fun facts about the fall

  • The Green Deception: The green color of leaves is due to chlorophyll, which is dominant most of the year. When chlorophyll breaks down in the fall, it allows the natural colors of the leaves (red, yellow, orange, and purple) to shine through.
  • Climate Change and Fall Foliage: Global warming could potentially ruin the beautiful fall foliage we look forward to each year. Leaf colors are highly affected by temperature, light, and water supply. If temperatures remain too warm, it could delay the leaves from showing their natural colors.
  • Bobbing for Apples: This popular Halloween game actually started out as a British courting ritual. Males were assigned an apple, and females would bob for them, trying to get the right apple from the man she wanted. If she did, it meant they were destined to be together.
  • Autumn Babies and School Performance: Research has shown that children who are born in autumn (between September and December) are more likely to do better in school and reach a "good level of development" than those born at other times of the year.
  • Why Leaves Fall: As their exposure to light decreases in the fall, leaves start to produce a hormone that boosts the growth of a cell between the stem and the leaf. This process forces the leaf to fall off the stem.
  • Fall in Love in Autumn: Research shows that colder weather makes people want to get closer to others and also ignites the desire to find a relationship so they aren't alone in the winter.
  • Best Time for Aurora Borealis: The longer nights and cooler weather make fall the best time to see the aurora borealis. Geomagnetic storms are about twice as frequent during the fall, creating the light show.
  • Heart Attack Rates Drop: According to the New England Journal of Medicine, the rate of heart attacks for Americans is known to fall on the Monday following the end of daylight savings time.
  • Autumn Babies and Athleticism: Kids who are born in the fall are more likely to be athletic. Researchers at the University of Essex in Great Britain found that kids born in the fall are more athletic, possibly due to their mothers having more exposure to the sun during pregnancy, which helped her body produce more vitamin D, giving the kids stronger bones.
  • Pumpkin Spice: Despite its name, pumpkin spice doesn't taste like real pumpkin, which generally just tastes like squash. The flavor is a mix of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, dry ginger, and cloves and has nothing to do with a squash flavor.

Did you know?

What happens during fall?

In the Northern Hemisphere, autumn occurs roughly from September through to November. It's a magical time of year when colors begin to shift and the landscape changes. In the USA, this transition period between summer and winter is called fall. Not only does the landscape look pretty, but the prices are equally attractive. Those ridiculous summer prices during autumn begin to fall!

What happens during the fall? Temperatures drop, and the days become shorter, with fewer daylight hours. The crisp, colder weather forces the foliage from seasonal vegetation to begin dying off, creating a rainbow of natural colors. Animals in the Northern Hemisphere also get ready for their hibernation season. Fall has an official end when the winter solstice occurs on December 21st.

Typically, fall was always known as the harvest season because it's when crops were harvested. There are many celebrations that take place around the harvest season, which are still celebrated today.

During fall, many places in the United States are prettier, making it a great time to travel!
