Attachment theory is over 100 years old

John Bowlby, a British researcher, developed attachment theory in the mid-1900s. He was trying to understand the distress that infants experienced when they were separated from their mothers. While researching, Bowlby found that babies would react differently to separation from their parents. Some would cry and scream and be unsoothable; some would hardly notice their parents were gone and continue to play like nothing was happening. Through his research and the work of later experts, the attachment types were developed, which help to summarize the basic types of attachments people have and how they respond based on the nearness or distance of people they love.
