History Lesson

Numbers have been an essential part of human civilization for thousands of years

The ancient Egyptians were among the first to develop a system of numbers, using hieroglyphs to represent different quantities. They also developed mathematical tools such as the abacus, which allowed them to perform basic calculations.

The ancient Greeks were also renowned for their contributions to mathematics, with figures such as Pythagoras, Euclid, and Archimedes making groundbreaking discoveries in geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. They believed that numbers were the key to understanding the underlying order and structure of the universe, and their mathematical insights continue to influence modern science and technology.

During the Middle Ages, the development of Arabic numerals revolutionized the field of mathematics, making it easier to perform complex calculations and record numerical information. The use of zero as a placeholder allowed mathematicians to work with larger numbers and perform more sophisticated calculations.

In the modern era, advances in computing technology have made it possible to perform calculations and analyze data on a scale that was previously unimaginable. From the development of the first mechanical calculators in the 19th century to the invention of the modern computer in the 20th century, technology has continually pushed the boundaries of what is possible with numbers.

Today, numbers continue to play a vital role in our lives, from the prices we pay for goods and services to the data we use to make decisions in business, science, and politics. While the history of numbers may seem dry and academic, it is a fascinating story of human ingenuity, creativity, and curiosity and a testament to our endless quest to understand and master the world around us.

Did you know?

Zero has often been 86'd

Whether we like it or not, most of our lives is measured in numbers. From how many pounds we weight to the number on the bills we get every month, we exist in numbers. In case you're worried about not having a zero balance on your credit cards and bills, you can take heart in the fact that the number zero wasn't a thing for centuries. You won't find the number zero represented in Ancient Greek or Ancient Roman mathematics; instead, it was an automatically assumed but never pictured digit. The number zero takes root in Ancient Mayan and Mesopotamian cultures, and it wasn't incorporated into our current system until 1598 when the scientist Fibonacci introduced the decimal system. Back then, he called the zero, the zephyrum. So the next time, you feel like you're aiming for zero, step back and realized that it was a created number — not something that's always been around.
