Joselyn wasn’t too keen on multiple choice in high school. Whether you love or hate it, candy corn is one of Halloween's biggest staples. Individually shaped like snowflakes, over 9 billion of these sweet kernels are sold yearly. In 1898, the Goelitz Confectionary Company created the beloved Halloween snack, but it wasn't for the sake of the spooky season. Back then, the number of farmers was exponentially larger than it is today, and corn was one of the biggest crops. Instead of being marketed as a fall treat, candy corn was sold as a treat for hard-working farmers around the country. Since then, candy corn has become associated with fall's biggest holidays. Although they're considered one of the most unhealthy candies in a Halloween treat bag, their long history makes them worthy of their place among the wrapped candy bars and lollipops. So the next time you pass out a handful, remember that you're giving out a piece of history.
