Where did pizza really come from?
Yes, the style of pizza we eat today is much-recognized as an Italian invention. But it had a history even before the poor in Naples, Italy combined flatbread with various toppings for an easy and inexpensive meal. The Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians ate flat bread cooked in mud ovens and topped with olive oil and spices (a dish known as focaccia). The famous explorer Marco Polo first introduced the concept of a pizza when he returned from China. Once tomatoes were introduced to Europe in 1522, Italians started to experiment with the tasty fruit, and not long after we started to see pizza as the modern treat it is.
