It starred Mario as a carpenter trying to rescue his girlfriend from the clutches of a giant ape. From there, the franchise evolved into the classic Super Mario Bros. games, which introduced the world to the concept of side-scrolling platformers.
Over the years, Mario has starred in countless games across a variety of genres, from racing games to role-playing games to puzzle games. The franchise has also spawned numerous spinoffs and crossovers, including the popular Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. series.
One of the reasons for the enduring popularity of the Mario franchise is its universal appeal. People of all ages and backgrounds can find something to love in these games, whether it's the colorful graphics, the catchy music, or the engaging gameplay. Originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1985, the game follows Mario and his brother Luigi as they navigate the Mushroom Kingdom, battling enemies and collecting coins and power-ups along the way.
Super Mario Bros. was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, who also created other classic Nintendo franchises like Donkey Kong and The Legend of Zelda. Miyamoto drew inspiration from his own experiences as a child exploring the forests and caves near his home in Japan.
The game's success was due in part to its innovative design and gameplay mechanics, such as Mario's ability to jump and break bricks with his head. It also featured memorable characters like the villainous Bowser, the damsel-in-distress Princess Toadstool (later renamed Princess Peach), and the friendly mushroom-headed creatures known as Toads.
Super Mario Bros. has spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs over the years and remains one of Nintendo's most beloved franchises. It has also inspired countless imitators and influenced the development of other video games, making it a true cultural icon.
