History Lesson

One of the oldest instruments still in use today is the flute

The oldest known flute dates back over 40,000 years and was made from bird bones. These early flutes were used in religious ceremonies and were often believed to have magical powers.

In ancient Egypt, music played a crucial role in religious and social life. They created a variety of instruments, such as the harp, lyre, and lute. The Greeks, on the other hand, had a profound influence on the development of Western music, and they invented instruments like the aulos (a type of double-piped flute) and the kithara (a large lyre).

During the Middle Ages, musical instruments continued to evolve, with the emergence of the pipe organ, which is still in use in many churches today. The Renaissance saw the development of new stringed instruments, such as the violin, viola, and cello, which are still widely used in orchestras.

The Baroque period saw the rise of the harpsichord, which was used as both a solo instrument and as an accompaniment to other instruments. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the piano was invented, and it quickly became the most popular instrument of the era.

The 20th century saw the rise of electronic instruments such as the synthesizer, which revolutionized the way music was created and recorded. Today, there is an incredible variety of musical instruments available, from traditional acoustic instruments to the latest digital synthesizers.

Did you know?

Certain instruments defy categories

If you analyze the make up of any orchestra, you'll find that musical instruments fall into a few basic categories: percussion, brass, wind, and strings. While some, like the viola and the cello, are easy to play into the strings categories, others are a little more challenging to nail down. At least, they're so versatile that they can fall into other parts of their definitions. For instance, the saxophone is clearly a wind, or reed, instrument, but its construction also makes it qualify to sit with the brass section. Then, there's the piano. When you see a grand piano with a grouping, you'll often see it near the percussion section. Although it's usually classified as a string instrument, it's also a percussion instrument. Without the rhythmic playing of the pianist's hands, the strings inside the piano would not be struck to make a sound. Both xylophones and marimbas, also considered percussion instruments, are set up to resemble piano keys and mimic the action of the hammers inside the piano.
