History lesson

Wizards have been around for a very long time

In ancient civilizations, wizards and other magical practitioners were often revered for their knowledge and wisdom, occupying important roles as healers, advisors, and spiritual guides. In Ancient Egypt, for example, priests were believed to possess magical powers that enabled them to communicate with the gods, protect the pharaoh, and maintain cosmic order. Similarly, in Mesopotamian culture, the "ashipu" were revered for their ability to ward off evil spirits and diseases, while the "baru" served as diviners and seers who interpreted omens and signs from the gods.

The archetype of the wizard as a wise and powerful figure also appears in the mythologies and legends of other ancient cultures, such as the druids of Celtic tradition, who were revered for their knowledge of the natural world and the arcane arts, and the Greek figure of Hermes Trismegistus, a legendary sage and magician who was said to have authored the Hermetic Corpus, a foundational text in Western esotericism.

However, the portrayal of wizards and magic users has not always been positive. In the European Middle Ages, the fear of witchcraft and sorcery led to the widespread persecution of individuals believed to possess magical powers. This period saw the emergence of the figure of the witch as a malevolent practitioner of dark magic, often in league with the devil. The infamous witch trials of the early modern period, which saw thousands of people executed for alleged witchcraft, further reinforced this sinister image of magical practitioners.

Despite the negative connotations surrounding wizards and magic users during this period, the archetype of the wise and powerful wizard persisted in the realm of folklore and literature. The figure of Merlin, the legendary magician who advised King Arthur in the Arthurian legend, embodies the archetype of the wise and benevolent wizard, combining elements of the Celtic druid, the Christian prophet, and the ancient sage.

The 20th century saw a resurgence in the popularity of wizards and magical practitioners in popular culture, with the advent of modern fantasy literature and the growing interest in the occult and the supernatural. J.R.R. Tolkien's seminal work, The Lord of the Rings, introduced the character of Gandalf, a wise and powerful wizard who plays a crucial role in the epic battle between good and evil. Gandalf, with his iconic staff and long, flowing beard, has become a quintessential image of the wizard in contemporary popular culture.

Perhaps the most influential depiction of wizards in recent history comes from J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, which has captivated readers and audiences worldwide with its richly imagined world of magic and enchantment. The Harry Potter universe is populated by a diverse array of wizards and witches, each with their own unique abilities and characteristics, from the heroic figures of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, to the enigmatic and complex character of Severus Snape, to the dark and powerful villain, Lord Voldemort.

Quiz WriterCharlie, Heywise Staff

Charlie took to the written word like a fish takes to water. That is to say; they found themselves immersed in literature from before they were born. They've been known to tell their friends how they can still remember the passages their parents read to them when they were in utero - Emily Dickinson, Jane Austen, and a bit of Hunter S. Thompson thrown in to balance it out. Charlie keeps their feet wet, whether they're whipping up pithy one-liners to tease your brain or busy working on their second novel (the first one is available on Amazon under a pen name they refuse to disclose). You’re sure to get a kick out of giggle-worthy explanations and outrageous hints, and still come away feeling like you’ve just expanded your knowledge base.

Did you know?

Every Hogwarts Legacy interaction matters

As you might expect, Hogwarts Legacy is full of surprises. Whether you've managed to have Poppy unlock the Gob of the Gobstones extra game or you meet another character on your way, each of them has something special to offer. From bonuses to portals to new worlds, the 1800s-theme game will keep you looking for more. Much like in real life, you'll need to also interact with some characters that are not your favorites. In fact, some of them are downright scary.

Nonetheless, your potential to experience all the game has to offer depends on your ability to outwit and deal with some shady Slytherin House experts. Whether you're eight or 80 or you're a Hogwarts expert or a newbie, each Hogwarts Legacy quest is different for everyone. Once you build your character, you'll have to hob-knob and outmaneuver other brainiacs to get ahead. Do you think you can do it, or will you struggle?
