The Evolution of Bobbleheads
Before Funko Pops became the kings of collectible shelves, bobbleheads had their own long and quirky history. The first known bobbleheads date back to the 18th century, when ceramic “nodding-head figures” were made in China and later spread to Europe. These early versions were handcrafted and often depicted noble figures, animals, or religious icons.
Fast forward to the 1960s, and bobbleheads became a pop culture craze in the U.S. Major League Baseball teams started producing player bobbleheads as stadium giveaways, making them a must-have for sports fans. By the early 2000s, they had expanded into everything from movie characters to political figures.
Funko entered the scene in 1998 with its first collectible—a bobblehead of Big Boy, the fast-food mascot. This success led to a wave of pop culture-inspired bobbleheads, but it wasn’t until the introduction of Funko Pop Vinyls in 2010 that the brand truly exploded. By simplifying the bobblehead design into a compact, stylized figure, Funko created a product that appealed to every fandom imaginable, leading to one of the biggest collectible booms in history.

Not all Funko Pops stay on store shelves forever. Once a figure is “vaulted,” Funko permanently stops producing it, meaning whatever is out there is all that’s left. While some characters get re-released in new poses or special editions, many vaulted Pops become highly sought-after collectibles, with their value skyrocketing over time.
For example, early Disney, Star Wars, and Marvel Pops—like the original Boo Berry Funko Pop or first-wave Avengers figures—have sold for thousands after being vaulted. Even common Pops can turn into collectibles if demand grows and supply disappears. So if you see a Funko Pop you love, don’t wait too long—because once it’s vaulted, it’s gone for good!
