In the 1800s, the New England Confectionery Company (NECCO) released Sweethearts Conversation Hearts for the first time. Daniel Chase was the founder’s brother. It was his idea to create the “motto hearts” as they were once called. Not only did he come up with the sweet concept to print words directly onto the candy, but he invented the machine that cut the shapes and mixed red vegetable coloring onto candy dough to create the notorious pink hue.
A wedding-day version of the candy was popular for a while and so were different shapes like a horseshoe, watch, and baseball at the turn of the century. While many original words are still featured including “Kiss Me” and “Be Mine” each decade introduces new sayings. For example, in the ‘90s, the hearts read “Fax Me” and “Email Me.” In 2018, a series of “Tweet Me” hearts will be released.
According to the Huffington Post, NECCO manufactures a whopping eight billion Sweethearts every single year. Around 100,000 pounds of these sweet treats are sold each day from New Year’s Day until Valentine’s Day.
