Sometimes we just like to eat certain things. We might decide to loathe something because of its texture or love a food because of its color. Or, quite simply, we’ve never had the food prepared well before and are suffering from a misapprehension that our Mom’s melty tuna casserole (with marshmallows in it?) is actually what all tuna casseroles taste like everywhere.

Adults have between 2,000 to 4,000 total taste buds, most of them are on the tongue. But there are some also in the back of the throat as well as the oral and nasal cavity.
Your taste buds are crammed with sensory cells connected to different nerve fibers. Each of these taste organs has between 10 and 50 sensory cells, which have finger-shaped extensions actually called “taste hairs.”
Ever thought some bad cooking or truly spicy food would kill your taste buds? Don’t worry: taste bud sensory cells are renewed once a week. Each of your cells has a sensitivity to different basic tastes. One might be sensitive to sweet, but another might be tuned to salty, sour, or bitter. The cells also transmit information about the intensity of the taste. Considering there are five basic tastes and ten levels of intensity, there are essentially 100,000 different flavors you could taste.
