There’s a difference between envy and jealousy
Although jealousy and envy are often used interchangeably, they mean very different things in different contexts. Envy is the feeling of lacking something, and it usually only involves two people. People feel envious when someone else has something they wish they had themselves, like a coveted possession or position at work. When someone says, “I wish I could just hop on a plane to Florida at the drop of a hat like Amy,” that’s envy. On the other hand, jealousy is about the fear of losing someone, and it tends to involve three people. The feeling usually creeps up when a relationship that’s important to someone is under threat. You might feel jealous when you catch your crush slow dancing with a mutual friend at a wedding, for example. You're envious of how attractive your crush finds your rival, but you’re jealous they seem to like them a lot more than you.
