History lesson
Long before lightsabers clashed in galaxies far, far away, the idea of a duel meant something deeper than a fight. Across centuries and continents, duels weren’t always about rage or revenge—they were about control, clarity, and code.
In medieval Europe, nobles fought duels of honor, often over words. These weren’t street brawls. They followed strict rules, with swords drawn only after permission and protocol. A wound wasn’t failure—it was proof you stood for something.
Meanwhile, in Edo-period Japan, samurai viewed the duel as an extension of philosophy. Their swords, the katana, weren’t just weapons. They were spiritual tools—symbols of focus, discipline, and the space between action and intention. To draw one without cause was a violation of personal code.
Even in 19th-century America, dueling crept into politics. Alexander Hamilton died in a duel he didn’t want to fight—because backing out was seen as weakness. These moments weren’t always wise. But they were loaded with meaning.
Over time, duels faded. But the idea stuck around. Not the violence—but the tension between what we feel and what we choose. A duel is rarely just about two people. It’s about what we stand for when it matters most.

Did you know?
In The Odyssey, Homer famously described the sea as “wine-dark,” not blue. In fact, there’s no word for blue anywhere in his epics—not for the sky, the sea, or anything else. Linguists believe this wasn’t because the Greeks were colorblind, but because blue wasn’t conceptually distinct in their world. Blue dyes were incredibly rare and expensive, and natural blue objects were few and far between. Many ancient languages developed color words in a consistent order—starting with black and white, then red, then green and yellow. Blue usually came last, only once people had a reason to name it.
