When people talk about an "American accent," they could be referring to one of several flavors. Some accents are centered around cities like New York, or they can be generalized into entire regions like a classic southern accent we've all heard on TV. The one we most hear from Hollywood movies is a general American accent that lacks any regionality. Interestingly, younger people tend to adopt this accent rather than the accent of the area in which they live. Does this mean we might lose the long drawls of Texas or the shrillness of a Bostonian enraged? It's not likely, though time will tell.
