History Lesson

Who Was Philo T. Farnsworth?

Philo T. Farnsworth was the man who turned science fiction into reality. Born in 1906 in a log cabin in Utah, he was just a teenager when he first sketched out the idea for electronic television. At 14, while plowing a field, he imagined how moving images could be transmitted using lines of electrons—an idea that would eventually lead to one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century.

In 1927, Farnsworth successfully demonstrated the first working television system, beating out corporate giants like RCA in the race to bring TV to the masses. But despite his groundbreaking achievement, he spent much of his career locked in patent battles with RCA, which tried to claim television as its own invention. Farnsworth ultimately won the legal fight, but the stress and financial strain took a toll.

Although he never became a household name, his contributions to technology shaped modern entertainment and communication. Before he died in 1971, he watched the Apollo 11 moon landing on a television—an invention he had pioneered—turning to his wife and saying, “That’s what I worked for.”

Did you know?

The First TV Remote Had a Wire

Before wireless remotes, changing the channel meant getting up and turning a dial—until the “Lazy Bones” remote was invented in 1950. This early remote was connected to the TV by a long, clunky wire, which quickly became a tripping hazard.

By 1955, the first wireless remote, the “Flash-Matic,” was introduced, using a beam of light to control the TV. Unfortunately, it had a major flaw—sunlight could accidentally change the channel! It took a few more tries before the remotes we know today became standard.
