When did the Olympics first begin and what were they like?
The Olympic Games exist in two phases. Phase one was around three millennia ago when the ancient Greeks would have athletic competitions in tribute to Zeus, who was the king of the gods of Mount Olympus. The contest was also an arts festival of sorts, and it took place every four years, just as it does today. This practice continued for almost 1200 years in Olympia. Other traditions that persist include the handing out of olive wreaths to winners. So, when did the modern Olympics start up again? In 1896, 200 Greek athletes and 45 athletes from 14 other countries gathered in Athens to revive a storied tradition, and the United States delivered the most champions. One hundred thousand people made their way to Athens for the opening, and the games were so popular they continued and grew, albeit with new hosts and winter editions to accommodate a broader range of sports.
