History Lesson
In the 20th century, slang played an important role in reflecting society's cultural changes and attitudes.
In the early 1900s, slang was used primarily by those on the fringes of society, such as immigrants, the working class, and African Americans. Some of the most common slang words from this time include "dude," "buzz off," and "what's the scoop."
During the 1920s and 1930s, jazz music and the rise of speakeasies brought about a new wave of slang terms, such as "hepcat," "jive," and "cool." These words reflected the new attitudes and cultural values of the time and helped define the era's youth culture.
The post-World War II period saw a new surge in slang, as soldiers returning from the war brought new expressions and lingo with them. This era also saw the rise of popular culture and the development of a youth culture that was distinct from the adult world. Slang from this time includes "dig," "bad," and "groovy."
In the 1960s and 1970s, the countercultural movements of the time, such as the hippie movement and the Civil Rights movement, brought about a new wave of slang terms that reflected the changing attitudes of the youth. These terms included "far out," "groovy," and "heavy."
The 1980s and 1990s saw a new era of technological advancements, introducing a new set of slang terms related to computers, the Internet, and pop culture. Words like "surf," "nerd," and "email" became part of the everyday vocabulary.
In recent years, the rise of social media and the Internet has led to the creation of a new generation of slang terms, many of which are used primarily by young people. These terms include "LOL," "OMG," "YOLO," and "lit."
Slang has played a significant role in reflecting the attitudes and cultural values of each era and has helped to define the youth culture of the time. It continues to evolve as technology and society change, and new slang terms will likely emerge in the future, reflecting the attitudes and values of future generations.

Did you know?
Generation Z is called that because it was the generation immediately after Generation Y. Gen Y got its name because it followed Generation X. Generation Y are generally referred to as millennials, and some Generation Z are known as Zoomers. Generation X was named after a novel by Douglas Coupland. The novel was named after Billy Idol's original band. And the band was actually named after a book about youth published in 1965. Before Generation X, there were the Baby Boomers, those born to parents after WWII. Before that came the Silent Generation. They were given that name by Time Magazine because they didn't oppose McCarthyism or support civil rights.
