Did you know?

What is Bracken Cave?

The Guinness Book of World Records recognized Bracken Cave Preserve for housing the largest bat colony in the world during summer. The swarm is so huge that it sometimes appears on weather maps—nearly 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats occupy the cave outside San Antonio between March and October. The bat cave has restricted access to aid conservation efforts, but anyone who would like to see these mammals emerging from the opening can take a guided evening tour. It's a goosebump-inducing sight! The bats soar through the skies for 1,000 miles to reach this spot in time for the warmer seasons. Soon after their arrival, the moms have babies. As many as 500 pups have been observed hanging from one square foot of the cave. Thanks to funding from environmental groups, the sky around the cave stays dark and human development isn't permitted. The bats eat insects that would otherwise affect cotton crops.
