The Black Eyed Peas story begins in East LA at a time not long after the 1992 riots. Will.i.am, the group's prime mover, would visit break-dancing clubs with friends and fellow MCs, Apl.de.ap, and Taboo. The three Angelenos were part of an exciting b-boy culture where artistic graffiti and street dance served as backdrops for freestyle battles distinct from hardcore gangsta rap. N.W.A. founder Eric "Eazy-E" Wright approached Will.i.am who roped Apl.de.ap along for a first album, 'Grassroots.' The project was shelved. Taboo then came on board, and the group managed to make two critically successful albums with Interscope on the back of positive, more socially conscious lyrics. But sales were tepid. Enter Wild Orchid singer, Fergie. The blonde songbird was the final puzzle piece in an already culturally-diverse group with potential for mass appeal. The group's 2003 hit 'Where is the Love?' and follow-up bangers brought worldwide fame and legions of millennial fans. Anyone familiar with 'Where is the Love?' will tell you that Justin Timberlake, 90s boy band lead par excellence and uber-successful solo artiste, features heavily on the song's chorus. Ever wondered how exactly this came to be? Once upon a time, Timberlake and Fergie were an item. Taboo met Fergie's ex at a break-dance club, and the two became fast friends. On holiday in Cancun, Timberlake mentioned loving the margaritas, and the senoritas and Taboo suggested turning the thought into a song. 'Senorita' made it onto the 'Justified' album and reached number 5 on the Mainstream Top 40. Its call-and-answer ending was a mainstay at proms and parties at the time. Timberlake came up with the hook for 'Where is the Love?' on that same trip, and the rest is musical history. The song would go on to receive two Grammy nominations and sparked commercial success for the band.
