What Spice Represents Your Soul?

Although many people do not realize it, the spices they choose to add to food for color and flavor often have deeper, spiritual meanings. Allspice, for example, represents compassion. This aromatic spice is often called Jamaican pepper or pimento, as it is one of the main spice ingredients for jerk chicken. It tastes like a combination of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and spicy pepper. It is no surprise that this spice is used in both sweet and savory dishes. Cooks have used the seeds, fruit, bark, roots and other parts of plants to flavor, preserve or color food. Spices have also been known for their potent medicinal properties. And they have been used to make perfumes or cosmetics and to perform some religious rituals or ceremonies, like weddings. What is your connection to your favorite spices? Take the quiz below to discover which spices resonate with your soul the most.

Spices Were Once Used as Currency

One thing many people do not realize is that common spices like salt, pepper, and nutmeg was used as currency before they were used to season or preserve food. When Ancient Roman soldiers received payment for their services, they were often paid with sacks of salt. Some cultures, such as the ancient Greeks, used salt to purchase slaves. Perhaps the French, British and Chinese empires can be credited with taking spices as currency to a new level of significance since they used spices to support themselves in their local and regional economies and placed a tax on the salt trade. Imagine how the availability of spices might change if it were still considered a form of currency today.
