Many a chef labors unrecognized behind the scenes in the kitchen. Then there are the famous foodies. Today, there are entire networks devoted to their culinary efforts. Whether you know your way around knives or not, you've likely enjoyed some screen time with the cooking celebrities depicted in this quiz.
We’ll give you a little taste of text about the person and their pictures — it’s up to you to identify the famous foodie from the list of four options we provide (wine pairings with this quiz are up to you!).
Let us introduce you to the Listicle Liege, the Article Aficionado, the one and only Nathan. Since creating his first photo collage at the age of five with images clipped from his mom’s Chatelaine magazines (all of them), it’s been nearly impossible to stem this one’s tide of visual learning. Be it the annals of history or the latest celeb gossip, Nathan has probably researched it, likely already has a folder of relevant photos on his desktop, and definitely learned a lot of interesting facts to go with those images. Whereas most well-read adults have bookshelves full of classic literature, Nathan’s stacks are composed of National Geographic and TIME special editions and a curated section of first-grade readers (for inspiration). If you prefer picture books to wordy novels, listicles by Nathan are right up your alley.
Many of the names in this quiz have been nominated, if not awarded, the foundation’s annual accolades for excellence in cuisine, culinary writing and culinary education.
The foundation is named after pioneer foodie James Beard from Portland Oregon. He hosted the first food program on TV in 1946 and was also an early enthusiast for cooking with local provisions. He wrote several seminal cookbooks between 1945 and 1955 and established his own cooking school in 1955. Although he died in 1985, at the age of 81, his legacy remains with his name associated to this day with culinary achievements. The foundation that bears his name, founded in 1986, has the stated mission of celebrating, nurturing and honoring chefs and other foodies “making America’s food culture more delicious, diverse, and sustainable for everyone.”
2017 James Beard Award Winners included Le Coucou, in NYC, as the Best New Restaurant; Michael Solomonov of Zahav in Philadelphia as the overall Outstanding Pastry Chef; Zachary Engel of Shaya New Orleans as Rising Star Chef, and Stephen Starr (whose Starr Restaurants include Le Coucou and Serpico) as Outstanding Restaurateur. Two of this quiz’s celebs were also linked to the winner’s list via Ghaya Oliveira, of Daniel, as the Outstanding Pastry Chef, and as the owner of the Outstanding Restaurant, Topolobampo in Chicago (but we can’t name him here!). Today it is considered a great honor to be invited to cook at the historic James Beard House in New York City’s Greenwich Village.
