Seinfeld Almost Didn't Make It

The show was originally conceived by Jerry Seinfeld as a 90-minute special about how comedians get their material. However, after developing the concept with Larry David, they both decided it would work better in an episodic format and conceived a pilot. Most of the characters were fictionalized versions of themselves or real comedians. The first episode actually did poorly in its initial run. One of the notes from NBC: "none of the audience was eager to ever watch the show again." But, instead of being smothered before it could begin, the show was given a chance. Thankfully, it got a much better reception from TV critics in the wild.
