History of Adult Swim
Adult Swim debuted in 2001, and from the get-go has produced edgy, risqué, experimental shows that often explore different animation styles and push the boundaries of humor. The programming block airs late night on the Cartoon Network, and the name came from the American term in public swimming pools for the period when children are restricted from the pool.
Before Adult Swim officially premiered, several shows had a “stealth” premiere on Cartoon Network in the wee hours of the morning. These shows included Sealab 2021, Harvey Birdman, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. With the success of other animated shows in the 90s like The Simpsons and Beavis and Butthead, Cartoon Network wanted to take advantage of the adult interest in animation and create targeted programming.
September 2, 2001, marked the official beginning of Adult Swim with the debut of Home Movies; the next week was the start of Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
