What's up with birth charts?

Astrology, the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies and their influence on human affairs, began in Mesopotamia around the 3rd millennium BCE. The Babylonians were the first to develop a system for predicting the movements of the stars and planets, which they believed had a profound impact on the natural world and human events. Their knowledge was later passed on to the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, who further refined and expanded upon the Babylonians' astrological concepts.

One of the most influential figures in the history of astrology was the 2nd-century Greek astronomer and astrologer Claudius Ptolemy. Ptolemy's work, the Tetrabiblos, laid the foundation for Western astrology and established the concept of the zodiac, a celestial coordinate system dividing the sky into twelve equal sections, each corresponding to a different astrological sign. The zodiac signs, in turn, are determined by the position of the Sun at the time of a person's birth. Each sign is associated with particular characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses, which are believed to manifest in the lives of those born under that sign.

The natal chart, also known as the birth chart or horoscope, is a diagram representing the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at the exact moment and location of an individual's birth. In ancient times, these charts were primarily used by rulers and nobles to determine the auspiciousness of various endeavors and to predict the future of their kingdoms. As astrology spread throughout the Hellenistic world and later to the Roman Empire, the practice of casting birth charts for individuals became increasingly common.

Constructing a birth chart involves determining the positions of the celestial bodies in relation to the Earth and plotting them on a circular diagram divided into twelve sections or houses. Each house corresponds to a specific area of life, such as relationships, career, or health. The ascendant, or rising sign, is the zodiac sign that was on the eastern horizon at the time of birth and is considered particularly significant in shaping an individual's personality and life path. The positions of the planets within the houses and the aspects or angles they form with each other are then analyzed to provide insights into an individual's character, strengths, challenges, and potential.

The practice of astrology and the use of birth charts have persisted throughout history, adapting to the cultural, religious, and scientific contexts of different periods and regions. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, astrology was closely linked to medicine, with physicians often casting horoscopes to determine the best course of treatment for their patients. In the early modern period, the advent of the scientific revolution and the rise of empirical methods led to a decline in astrology's status as a legitimate form of knowledge.

You can trust Taurus with your secrets

Born from April 20 to about May 20, Taurus is known as the bull of the zodiac. Although they live up to their stubborn reputation and are willing to charge red flags, they're also one of the most grounded and humble members of the astrological lineup. Because Taurus is an earth sign, they tend to take matters of the home very seriously. They like to surround themselves with cherished things and tend to keep their personal lives close to their chests. If a Taurus loves something, they'll do their best to protect and nurture it. They love to see the people and things around them grow. Even though they're not quite as mysterious as Scorpio, they don't give everything about themselves away. In fact, they won't give anything away. If you have a secret you need to get off your chest, you can trust a Taurus. They are better than any other sign about keeping their lips closed.
