Zodiac-like beliefs crop up all over the world

The Babylonian zodiac is familiar to us in many ways, featuring constellations like Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. However, this is far from the only zodiac system around the world. Most people know a bit about the Chinese zodiac, but other cultures have followed the skies in much the same way for millennia.

The Hindu zodiac, known as the Vedic zodiac, is based on the Hindu calendar and consists of twelve signs that are associated with specific personality traits and destiny. The Vedic zodiac is a more complex system than the Chinese or Babylonian zodiacs, with each sign being divided into nine sub-categories based on the position of the moon at the time of birth. The Hindu zodiac is still widely used in India and is considered an important aspect of Hindu astrology.

The Mayan zodiac, also known as the Mayan horoscope, is based on the Mayan calendar and consists of twenty day signs, each associated with a specific deity and symbol. The Mayan zodiac was used to predict the future and to determine the best time for important events, such as weddings and wars. The Mayan zodiac is a unique system that reflects the Mayan's understanding of the cosmos and their place within it.

The Native American zodiac is a system of animal totems that is used by many indigenous tribes in North America. Each animal sign is associated with specific personality traits and spiritual qualities, and it is believed that a person's animal sign reflects their true nature and destiny. The Native American zodiac is still widely used by indigenous communities and is considered an important aspect of their cultural heritage.

The African zodiac, also known as African astrology, is a system that is used by many cultures in this country to predict the future and to understand the universe. The African zodiac is based on the movements of the stars and consists of twelve signs, each associated with a specific animal or symbol. It's considered a key aspect of African culture and is still widely used today.

As you can see, there are many zodiac systems throughout human history. A fascinating view into cultures, both ancient and modern, they're a testament to the human desire to understand the world around us and to predict the future, and they are an important aspect of cultural heritage and tradition.

Quiz WriterJake, Heywise Staff

Jake didn’t think he’d become a writer when he was growing up in southern Saskatchewan, Canada, but fate had another idea. After barely squeaking through grade 9 English, by the luck of the draw Jake found himself with the most inspiring literature instructor his small town had ever known, and grade 10 English changed his life! Suddenly, evenings once spent at the hockey rink were spent curled up on the couch with the best of Hemingway, Dickens, and John Grisham. A valedictorian address and English degree at the University of Regina later, Jake is proud to call Heywise his favorite place to pen informative quizzes about all his passion projects. If you’re reading a post and pick up a hint of classic English literature, you’re probably reading something by Jake - especially if you come away feeling like a slightly better person for it.

Did you know?

The zodiac Is ancient

While you might have guessed that the zodiac is pretty old, are you aware of just how ancient it truly is? The zodiac that we are aware of today was in use during the Roman era and appears in an ancient text from the 2nd century CE. However, the zodiac uses ideas from Hellenistic astronomy, which originated from ancient Babylonian astronomy. This means that elements of our modern zodiac date back to around 500 BCE, making it over 2500 years around.
