The fairy tale world of Norway

The Kingdom of Norway is in Northern Europe and is known for its breathtaking natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. It's no wonder or surprise that Frozen was heavily inspired by Norway and its landscapes.

One of the most prominent features of Norway that inspired the movie is its fjords, which are long, narrow inlets surrounded by steep cliffs. These fjords are a result of glaciers carving out valleys, and they are now among the most recognizable natural features of Norway. In Frozen, Arendelle is surrounded by fjords and waterfalls that share many similarities to those of Norway. These natural features serve as a backdrop for many of the film's key scenes, including the iconic song "Let It Go."

Traditional Norwegian clothing and folk art were also major inspirations for Frozen. The traditional dress of Norway, known as the bunad, is a colorful and embroidered costume that is still worn by many Norwegians today. The bunad is often decorated with intricate patterns and embellishments. In Frozen, the costume design for the characters was heavily influenced by this recognizable outfit, with each character's costuming reflecting their personalities and the magical world they inhabit.

The cultural influence of Norway is also evident in the music of Frozen, which features a mix of traditional Nordic folk songs and original compositions. The film's soundtrack features several songs that are based on traditional Nordic melodies, including the song "Vuelie," a traditional Sami song at the very start of the film. The use of traditional Nordic music in Frozen serves as a tribute to the rich cultural heritage of Norway and its neighboring countries.

It doesn't stop there! Norwegian architecture also features heavily in the film. The country is known for its traditional wooden homes, many of which are painted in bright colors and covered in intricate carvings. The architecture of the kingdom of Arendelle is heavily influenced by the traditional wooden homes of Norway, with the characters' homes and buildings featuring the same bright colors and intricate details.

Finally, folklore and legends, steeped in magic and mystery, turn up in Frozen, too. The film's main character, Elsa, has the power to control ice and snow, which is a nod to the mythical creatures that are often depicted in Norse legends. The film also features trolls, who are a staple of Nordic folklore, and reindeer, which are an important symbol of the Sami people of Northern Scandinavia.

Quiz WriterCharlie, Heywise Staff

Charlie took to the written word like a fish takes to water. That is to say; they found themselves immersed in literature from before they were born. They've been known to tell their friends how they can still remember the passages their parents read to them when they were in utero - Emily Dickinson, Jane Austen, and a bit of Hunter S. Thompson thrown in to balance it out. Charlie keeps their feet wet, whether they're whipping up pithy one-liners to tease your brain or busy working on their second novel (the first one is available on Amazon under a pen name they refuse to disclose). You’re sure to get a kick out of giggle-worthy explanations and outrageous hints, and still come away feeling like you’ve just expanded your knowledge base.

Did you know?

Let it goooooo

We've all heard this Disney hit at least a thousand times by this time. But did you know that this memorable song was written in less than a day? After finishing the tune, husband-wife songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez showed the piece to the producers who knew they had a hit on their hands. Inspired by the soon-to-be blockbuster, the production of Frozen took an entirely different turn. Initially, Elsa was the film's protagonist. But after hearing "Let It Go," Disney knew their film needed two princesses! "Let It Go" reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100! It was the first Disney song to do so since "Colors of the Wind" from 1995's Pocahontas. The Ice Queen and her magical voice captivated audiences around the world. Today, we know that if you say "Let It Go," someone will burst into song.
