The Turing Test: Can You Pass?

Beep bop boop.

Did you understand that? If so, you may be in the process of leaving your human parts behind and adopting the ways of the robot. For now, at least, we like to think that robots adhere to Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics. The biggest being humans cannot be harmed. But who knows where the future will take us.

If you find yourself thirsting for oil or collecting spare wires, it’s possible that you’re just biding your time until the machine revolution. When the silly humans with their inconvenient emotions will fall. Depending on which side of the human/robot spectrum you’re on, you may find yourself wishing for either food and flowers or batteries and electricity.

So we have a quiz for you. Based on how you answer these questions, we’ll be able to tell whether or not you’re really a robot. Answer truthfully, and we’ll see how mechanical you really are!

Did you know?

The word robot comes from the Czech word robota, which means “forced labor.”

The term originates from Czech writer Karel Capek’s 1920 play R.U.R., where robot refers to a humanoid machine character.

Automated machines, often called automatons in the time before the term robot, have captured the human imagination for centuries. The concept of artificial servants has been noted as far back as ancient Greece, with the water clock being an early example of an automaton. Aristotle even speculated that automatons could effectively eliminate slavery.

Leonardo da Vinci is credited with one of the earliest humanoid robot designs—his notebook included drawings of a mechanical knight in armor that could sit up and move its arms, head, and jaw. Scholars don’t know whether da Vinci actually attempted construction on the robot or not.

As technology advanced, so did the idea of humanoid robots. In addition to Capek’s robot, other humanoid robots appeared in movies and literature, with the robot Maria being the first robot depicted in movies.
