Living in a galaxy far, far, away isn't always fun and games considering all the blaster fights, Force chokes, speeder bike crashes, Rancor snacks, primitive Ewok traps, and battle station explosions. According to one official calculation, more than 1,500,000 people died on the Death Star when Luke piloted his X-wing fighter down a trench like it was Beggar's Canyon back home. And that figure doesn't even take into account all the droids and trash compactor monsters on board. Of course, not everyone who dies in the Star Wars universe disappears into the dark void of space. Various Jedi masters have died and turned into Force ghosts. And sometimes, a character we thought was swallowed up into the history books unexpectedly reappears on-screen decades later (we're looking at you, Boba Fett!). George Lucas created the original Star Wars for less than $10 million. By the time the summer of 1977 was over, it had already made $100 million at the box office. The combination of colorful aliens, quirky droids, legendary heroes, and one of Hollywood's most famous bad guys capture the public's imagination. Over the decades, the franchise spawned more movies, toys, video games, board games, novels, theme park rides, and even a lampooned Christmas Special. When George Lucas sold the entire franchise to Disney in 2012, he walked away with $4 billion in his pockets. But don't feel bad for the House of Mouse. Less than a decade later, the franchise's total value was estimated to be around $70 billion.
