The National Organization for Women was founded in 1966 to promote action through grassroots activism. Today this arm of the women’s movement is the largest organization of grassroots feminist activists with hundreds of chapters nationwide.

NOW was founded by 49 individuals — 28 women who signed on at the Third National Conference of Commissions on the Status of Women, and another 21 women and men who joined at the NOW Organizing Conference later that year.

The organization was initially founded because the time had “come for a new movement toward true equality for all women in America, and toward a fully equal partnership of the sexes, as part of the world-wide revolution of human rights now taking place within and beyond our national borders.”
